I've often been told I was the one in control of me. With so many things hitting a situation all at once it's hard to feel in control of yourself. So, I find the little things I can control in life. I'm not always successful and goodness knows I've failed more than once. But I try again and again to reach my goal. Somehow I manage to reach my goal but my landing is not at all graceful, LOL. As for walking into a room and feeling the energy in that room, yup, often I have to walk out before my agitation gets the better of me. I can "read" a room and find the issue so I will avoid that "issue" to do what I need to do and then leave. Then I'll go and sit in my truck and just "readjust" my focus so I can drive home. I started to learn how to do these things when I was in my early 20s so I've had lots of practice. But I'm not perfect and don't expect to be. Life is a classroom where one is always learning.
I agree that it can be difficult to feel we're in control of anything. What I like to remind myself of is that, although I might not be able to control a situation or person, I can learn how to control my responses to people and events. It's what you're talking about sitting in your truck and readjusting your focus. That is exactly what I'm talking about. And, I agree we're learning constantly and the more we learn the more we are able to be in charge of ourselves - at least to some degree. I've worked on learning to say I feel a certain way - not that someone or something MADE me feel that way. I get to choose and that is so liberating. Thanks for reading and commenting!
I thought about this question from different viewpoints. For example, I'm NOT in charge, I have no control over the amount of money I get from Social Security, but I AM IN CHARGE of what I spend the money on. Oh, really? I have no control over the cost of medical insurance, but I AM in charge of choosing whether or not to have a procedure. Oh, really? Do I think so? As my body gets older there are certain needs that have to be confronted. I'm NOT in control of what I have to choose from, but I AM in charge of the choice I ultimately make. You see what I'm getting at here? It's not always a "WHO'S" in charge (or in control), but it's a "WHAT'S" in control......of WHAT?
So I think the best answer I can give is to think of the question like it's a zen riddle: the student asks, "Who's in charge of you?" and the master points to the full moon. The student asks "Who's in charge of you?" and the master puts on a coat or he lays down and falls asleep, or he cleans his bowl after eating, or he pets his cat and the cat purrs. I think THOSE are the kind of answers that are authentic for me.
You paraphrased me very well! We get to choose what we do and how we react/respond and that is how we "own" ourselves and our lives. Love your Master - sounds like a wise one!!!
