Sometimes I worry about the election. I ask myself, "What can I do about it?" Answer: I can vote. But I ask myself, "Is that going to make a difference?" I say, probably not. I don't like any candidate, so that makes it easy: don't vote. But I ask myself, "Isn't that making it worse?" Maybe. So what to do? I ask, "Which candidate tells the best lies that I can agree with?" THERE'S the solution to my problem! The great philosopher, George Costanza, once said: "It's not a lie if you believe it." The answer to my worry about the election is to vote for the lie I believe the most, the lie that sounds the most like me. I feel better now.
I used to feel that way about voting - that my one little vote would be meaningless. I was in my foolish 20's when a friend pointed out that if everyone did that, only those with an axe to grind would determine who runs our government. Once I "got" that, I started to vote and haven't stopped since. I like to believe that if enough of us all vote for the best candidates we can find, things will go better for everyone. There are no perfect candidates. They are all flawed in one way or the other. We can only choose who we think is the best or run for office ourselves - which I am not going to do! LOL
Yes, I get that too. I was offering my story as an example of how I deal with "worry". I think my tone scale goes from worry, up to sarcasm, up to cynicism. I'm up there at the top.
