It’s one thing to espouse certain beliefs. A big question to ask ourselves is, “Do I live my life as if what I say I believe is true?” I think this is called “walking our talk.” It’s easy to feel aligned with our beliefs when we’re meditating, reading, or otherwise disengaged from other people and the happenings in the world.
It becomes a different matter when we need to talk with our neighbor or the clerk in the grocery store who’s trying to be friendly while sharing their less-than- progressive ideas with the customers.
It’s a different matter when we read or listen to the news only to discover someone in public office is trying to take away yet another of our freedoms.
Our minds can drift – or jump – to places of judgement and negativity very quickly, can’t they? Short of moving to a cave somewhere and becoming a recluse, what can we do if this happens to us. Here are two ideas. Share yours in the comments section, if you wish.
First, we accept that we’re human beings on this planet and at times things will upset or bother us. It’s true that we’re spiritual beings having a human experience. Sometimes I think we put too much pressure on ourselves and don’t want to allow our humanity to show itself. We think we must be spiritual all the time, whatever that means. Acknowledge this in ourselves when it happens, don’t give it any energy, and move on.
Second, this is one of the reasons it’s a good idea to have some sort of mantra that we mentally say whenever we’re not otherwise engaged. Some people like to say “love, peace,” while others call on a saint, guru, or angel. Having particular positive words we can keep as a running background to life helps a lot.
One of my favorite things to do every morning is to remind myself that today is a new adventure, and I welcome the surprises that will come my way. This attitude helps me live with a more open mind and heart and helps me walk my talk!
Living in grace and ease,
Krysta

The serenity prayer usually breaks my downward spiral. Over the years it's become my default when I noticed myself going sideways. I also give myself an add a girl for noticing that I'm doing it. That seems to help also.
