How many times have you heard that living in the present, in the now, is the key to living your spirituality? We have books such as, “The Power of Now,” “Living in the Now,” “Unlock the Power of Now,” “Be Here Now,” “Be Love Now,” “Spiritual Consciousness Now” ….and others. Even though these authors give some great ideas for living in the present, most of us still struggle with activating our own power of now. It’s easy to be seduced by the past or future while avoiding our current moments.
Creativity to the rescue.
When we are engaged in our creative pursuits whether they be drawing, painting, coloring, sewing, cooking, woodworking, writing or anything else, it is easy to be in the present moment. The more frequently we engage with our creative pursuits, the more often we live in the now. Perhaps this is why most of us feel spiritually and emotionally fed when we are being creative.
Our creativity demands that we pay attention to what we’re doing. It demands that we be with it fully and not casually. During rough and good times, our creativity is there to offer stability and groundedness in the present moment. It’s up to us to be sure to engage our creativity in ways that support our being present in our own lives.
I find having a sketchbook handy is helpful. Even if we don’t draw, making any kind of marks in our sketchbook can bring us back to the present if we find our attention has wandered to past or future. Our creative self is always there for us if only we invite them in. Give it a try and see what is there for you.
Here’s something I drew while reviewing the book Meditative Drawing by Lizzie Snow. This is a great way to be present in life while enjoying your creative self.
Creating with joy, grace and ease….

I love how you presented this. For me, creativity is kind of like a beautiful island that is always there for you, waiting for you. Not an escape, really; more of a centering place.
That's it! I can "be here now" when I'm focussing on whatever it is I might be creating. Perfect for those times when my monkey brain needs calming, but my body can't be still enough to go to my mat for meditation .
