Hinduism teaches that the world we live in is God’s play or drama. Lila (pronounced Leela) is said to be the play of creation. “To awakened consciousness, the entire universe with all its joys and sorrows, pleasures and pains, appears as a divine game, sport, or drama. It is a play in which the one Consciousness performs all the roles,” according to the philosophical tradition of Vedanta.
Frequently, I have told people we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously since this world, called 3-D consciousness, is just God’s movie and we’re all playing our parts. Lately, I’ve wondered if I walked into the wrong movie studio or maybe the part I was given has changed.
The world right now is upside down. Events and people aren’t what they should be. Some people are so far off the grid of the movie I thought I was in that I don’t even recognize them in the script. I’m not alone in feeling this way. Some of my colleagues are shaking their heads as much as I am wondering if the writer of this part of the movie made some big changes and didn’t tell us?
As various happenings hit the news cycle, I find myself in complete bafflement as to what’s going on. How can people who openly lie and commit illegal acts get away with it the way they do? How can people who wanted to see this country torn apart, destroyed, now be serving in some of the highest offices in our land? How can money from the pockets of citizens in the country who most wishes us evil, be accepted by politicians in our country? Shall I go on? No, you get my point. We live in crazy times. If this is God’s Lila, maybe it’s time for Her to hire some new writers.
Mostly, the question I have is “how do we handle this?” How do we live in this world that has gone bonkers? I’ve answered this question in this space more than once and I stand by my suggestions. Over the years, people have asked me why I’m not more political while others get upset when I do mention politics, thinking it to be an unspiritual topic.
I believe we’re all involved in politics all the time whether we know it or not. Every choice and decision we make affects everyone else – remember the butterfly who flapped its wings and caused the wave to crash into the shore?
We each have our own song to sing, our own way to be involved, our own calling. Some people are meant to march, give speeches, have a podcast, or register voters. Others are meant to write letters to the editor, talk to their neighbors, or cast their vote. It is important that everyone hears their own calling and follows it.
I believe the best way to change the world is to help people change their consciousness. This is what I do. This is my politics (although, like today, I do speak out on current issues when I can’t help myself). The more hearts that are open, the more people who are connecting to their inner divinity and love, the more people will make the decisions that are best for themselves and for the world.
Can you imagine someone with an open heart being able to kill a baby seal or take a fin from a shark and throw it back into the sea to die? No, me neither.
People who become involved in opening their consciousness can’t harm the environment, deny other people their rights or health care, engage in unfair labor or business practices, and so on. Having said this, of course, there are people who - once they open spiritually - do become very active in politics because that is their calling. And I support them in many ways.
What about you? What is your political calling and leaning? Is it the path of helping more people wake up and become aware? Or is it to be on committees, write letters, march, or speak before Congress? Whatever your calling, when it is done from a spiritual base of love and understanding, it is always more effective!
Get clear with yourself, live from that clarity and you will always know what to do whether it is political or personal in nature! And maybe this is all written into the movie we’re in – we just haven’t gotten to that part yet.
Living in Grace and Ease,
Krysta

Many years ago I had a vision that I was a zen monk living by the side of a river. Sometimes the river would run fast and hard, other times it would slow down and take its time. Travelers would take the river upstream and down, different boats and other floating devices would come and go. I would sit on the side of the river and put my feet in the water, saying nothing for long periods of time. Sometimes I would stand and do exercises, or I'd help a traveler or a family get on board their boat or help them get unstuck from the vines and roots in the water, and see them on their way to who knows where? This vision, in reality, has actually materialized in my real-time and present-day life. I actually live next to a creek that fills up in the rainy season. I watch people come and go and sometimes I interact with them...... like making comments on a blog. I don't try to get involved in their affairs, and neither do I ignore their concerns. Even in great activity and confusion spinning all around me, I remain at the center with my river and all its wisdom.
