Some folks are saying that we shouldn’t focus any more energy on the fact that the actor Will Smith slapped the comedian Chris Rock on national television because Smith didn’t like a joke Rock made about Smith’s wife. Along with many others, I say it does matter. In fact, it matters a lot. Why?
It matters because this was a physical assault that has, so far, resulted in no consequences. Young people, especial young boys, watched this and it sent a terrible message to them. This behavior is that of a bully as well as of someone who has a lot of money and prestige and is a small example of what is occurring on the national stage with Putin and Ukraine.
Like Smith, Putin feels he can attack and hurt others with impunity. This is what dictators and bullies do. They get away with it, too, at least for awhile.
The Academy is looking into this and might take some action against Smith. Rock has declined to file charges at this time. In my view, these are the kinds of behaviors we need to address as a society. We need to say this is not okay and not condone violence of any kind. Just because a person is famous and wealthy doesn’t mean they are above the law. Slapping someone is assault and requires consequences.

Unwelcome example of resorting to physical violence to resolve a conflict. Bad news.
There is a chance for this to become a learning and growth opportunity for everyone involved. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
