In all of this talk about womens’ right to choose, we hear very little from or about the men. Why? There are very few reports of virgin births and most of those are unreliable. It takes sperm to make a baby and most of the time this sperm is delivered directly to the woman from a man through sexual intercourse. Yes, there are other ways to deliver sperm in order to impregnate a woman. Let’s set those aside since those situations are usually carefully planned and the resulting fetus is wanted.
What about the rest? I know some men hang around to help the pregnant woman. Many, however, melt into the background and ask, “Who, me? I didn’t get her pregnant. She probably slept around so why should I be responsible?” And off he goes to sow more seeds. True, there are fabulous men who are responsible and care for their offspring - kudos to them. For women there is no choice other than adoption if the pregnancy is completed. Parents are committed to their children for the rest of their lives - unless the parent decides not to stick around.
Amy Coney Barrett, who because of her religious affiliation is openly against abortion, is a Supreme Court justice. She has said women don’t need access to abortion because they can go ahead and have their baby and then drop it off at their local fire station. According to this line of thinking, it wouldn’t matter how much a pregnancy would negatively impact the woman and no matter how much the woman did not want to be a parent, the woman should go ahead and go through the pregnancy and birth only to then abandon the child to strangers at a fire station. Really. She said this with a straight face while calling herself “pro-life.”
I am weary of hearing about how proud people are that they were “…raised by a single Mom who worked two jobs…” Arrrggghhhhh. Where is the father? I understand being proud of mothers who do this, but why do they have to? Where are the daddies and why aren’t they supporting their children emotionally, physically, and financially?
Abortion rates are going down which is good news since there are no women who enjoy having an abortion. Better use of contraceptives is on the rise and younger people are apparently less sexually active. Here's an article with some great information, facts, and figures that explains this.
Maybe the Supreme Court should just leave things well enough alone and let Roe v Wade stand as the established law it is - especially since over 70% of Americans are in support of choice. And maybe more men should step up to the plate and make their positions known if they are pro-choice, and be willing to take care of their babies who are born. If men want to be there when the order for a baby is placed - and clearly they do - perhaps they need to be more willing to be there when the order is delivered.
Wow! I agree 100% Thanks for the written word and the referral to the news article.
