Nope, I’m not talking about a woman’s right to all forms of healthcare including the termination of a pregnancy. I think most of you know where I stand on that issue. What just happened in Texas with the support of the Supreme Court should be sending chills down everyone’s back. This affects everyone no matter how you feel about the right to choose which has been the law of the land for over forty years. What I’m talking about is worse.
What could be worse? Government-sanctioned spying on your neighbor and the ability to turn them in for a bounty. I’m sure you know that the way this Texas law has been written allows citizens to report women getting abortions and anyone who even counsels them about abortion or helps them in any way. People get a bounty of $10,000 for turning in a fellow citizen. Chilled yet?
If you approve of the anti-woman law, do you approve of citizens reporting on one another? Are you aware the precedent this sets? What’s next? What about reporting men and women who live carnal lives together without being married? This is against most religions, yet thousands of people do it. What about married people who have affairs? Could this be the next reportable offense? Do you think I am overreacting?
Once something like this starts, it’s easy for it to flow into other areas of life that you might think are safe and aren’t. I am hopeful that enough people will see this for what it is and take appropriate action at the voting booth as well as through letters to the editor and talking with friends and family. If this is allowed to stand as it is, we are at the begining of a very slippery slope and I don’t think you will like where it lands.
With hope,
Krysta
I suspect we're at the beginning of a slippery cliff, not merely a slope.
