Do you know who Harvey Milk is?
LGBTQ Nation writes, “….Before Milk became one of the first out elected officials in America and a vocal proponent for gay rights, he served in the Navy, where he was court-martialed and discharged on February 7, 1955, 22 years before he would win election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.” He was assassinated in the late 1970’s. Now the Navy is naming a ship after him! The ship is 60% done and a celebration was held yesterday, Harvey Milk Day.
Why is this important?
When the civil rights of so many people are under attack right now, it is heart-warming to know that the Navy is honoring this brave gay man as well as some other civil rights activists. When you think things are bad and start to feel less than hopeful, these are the events you can hang on to, realizing there are many ways the country is beoming more inclusive. Despite what we might hear or see in the news, the country is headed in the right direction. Let’s share this far and wide and say, “More, please!”
