Earlier this year, I overheard some women talking about the aches and pains they were experiencing as they aged. They were in their early sixties and said they wish someone had told them about some of the aspects of aging they were experiencing. Being 75, I found myself thinking, “You ain’t seen nothing yet!” They were right, though. Instead of trying to sell lotions and potions or make people think they can stay 30 forever, someone should give people an idea of what they face as they grow older. And, as I will show you, it isn’t all bad.
I decided to give an online class and call it Growing Older and Wiser. Then I decided I could reach more people by starting a newsletter on Substack instead of doing a class. This newsletter was born and is a sister publication to my other Substack newsletter called Living with Grace and Ease that you’re reading right now!
I will be sending a series of videos where I discuss some of the positives and negatives of aging as well as various ideas about living situations, staying healthy emotionally as well as physically, and other related topics. The videos are accompanied with PDF files with suggestions, resources, and assignments for those who wish to do them. My idea is to help all of us grow wiser as we grow older and not simply become grouchy old people who are not happy.
Who am I that I dare think I have anything to share about aging? I have eight years experience in eldercare from independent living through assisted living and dementia care and being director at a senior center. I have a degree in psychology, certificates in gerontology, as well as spending many hours with older adults, their friends and families. I was a volunteer peer counselor for about a year where I supported other people going through various life challenges related to aging.
I’m in my mid-70’s and have a sister who is 90 as well as friends and colleagues who are older. We’ve shared lots with one another as well as navigating these times in our lives. In the videos, I share some of my personal journey and hope you will share in the comments section as well.
My intention is to send Growing Older and Wiser (GOAW) emails on Saturday, beginning December 24. If you miss any of them, they will live on my web page here at Substack.
Thanks for reading and subscribing. I look forward to our discussions and your wisdom!
