Generally, I don’t have much of a relationship with children. I was the youngest in my family so didn’t spend much time with kids younger than myself. I babysat once in my early teens and was scared the entire time waiting for the parents to return. My Mom was a school teacher and I went a lot of places with her and I tended to spend time with adults. I don’t have children, so, as I said, I don’t have much experience with children.
One morning shortly after arriving here in Phoenix, I was sitting out in the back yard and hear a whooshing sound. I looked over to our brick fence and saw a young girl jumping up and down on her trampoline. All I could see was her head as she bounced up and down. As she hit her highest spot, she could look over the fence and see me. She laughed and waved. I laughed and waved back. Since there, we’ve enjoyed this little game quite a few times. The last time I saw her, I asked how she was doing and she said, “I’m awesome!”
From time to time, she has other children join her as she did last evening. They laugh and giggle, scream and yelp. Some people probably think this would bother me since I’m really not a child-person. It doesn’t bother me at all. In fact, I enjoy hearing them have a good time enjoying the lives.
I got to thinking about it and realized part of the reason I enjoy hearing them is because they are so innocent and don’t have any idea of what’s going on in the world-at-large. Even though they will be facing some challenging times as they become adults, challenges you and I can only wonder about, right now they can play and laugh with abandon. Yes, I’m sure they have parental and educational issues, but that doesn’t keep them from being carefree when they play.
I allowed myself to close my eyes and joined the feelings of innocence, ease, and joy their voices were sending out into the Universe. I asked that this be magnified and allowed to enter the consciousness of everyone on the planet. The more everyone learns how to relax, play, be fully accepting of themselves and others, the sooner we’ll enjoy Mother Earth the way She intends. Yes, life these days can keep us on one foot where we don’t know what’s next. Letting ourselves indulge in some childlike play and laughter can go a long way towards being able to navigate this world with greater grace and ease.
Be awesome like my neighbor!
