A number of years ago, I reviewed a book about what the author called glimmers and glimpses. I interviewed the author, whose name I can’t remember now. He was elderly back then, so has probably passed over by now and I can’t find anything about the book through Ms. Google. Anyway, the point of the book was how all of us are given “glimmers and glimpses” during the day, during dreams, and when we meditate. The author’s position was that most of us don’t pay attention to or remember these. He’s right, of course.
How often an insight will pass through our mind and then keeps on going. If it happens during meditation, we think we will write it down when we’re finished, and then promptly forget. Or we’re involved in something during the day when an insight floats past. We’re busy, so don’t capture it.
I like to describe it as a butterfly or humming bird who stops at a flower briefly and then moves on. This author suggested we write down our glimmers and glimpses as they happen rather than waiting. He suggested we carry a notebook with us so we always have a place to write down these inspirations.
I started doing this years ago. I kept a little notebook where I recorded thoughts as they came to me during the day and I recorded insights given to me during dreams. Now, of course, we have our cell phones where we could not only write these down, we could record them verbally, if we wanted to.
Since we’re discussing capturing ideas, the other thing I like to do is keep a notebook where I copy inspiring quotes or passages from books or lectures. When I feel the need for inspiration, I can grab one of these little books, flip through it, and absorb positive, helpful ideas.
Could either of these ideas be helpful to you? Do you have another way to capture the wisdom given to you? If you like, please share in the comments section!
