I had an insight into "freedom" awhile back when I was experimenting with avant-garde music, whether it's jazz, classical or simply original compositions call it whatever.... and that insight was: as much energy and attention I devoted to freedom of expression through drums or piano, there’s no way for me to get free from the limitations of 88 keys. Or the limitations of a pair of drum sticks. "Freedom" had to be inside ME, and then I could use the natural limitations of a piano or drums to communicate something. Erich Fromm wrote an interesting book, "Escape From Freedom"... it says a lot.
