Everyone has a story
There used to be a series on a news program where the reporter would go to a city, pick up a phone book, open it at random, and put his finger on a name. He would then call the person and ask if he could interview them. It was astounding the interesting stories he uncovered and he realized everyone has a story.
This past week, I found out that a woman I have known for a few years was in a plane crash while on vacation in Alaska. I didn't want to be too nosy, but I had to ask her tons of questions about what that was like. Then I found out a fellow I know has a Mom with dementia who's living in a nursing home. Another dear soul is going through the death of her beloved cat.
What do all these people have in common? When you meet them, they smile at you, and ask how your day is going and have a routine conversation. Why am I bringing this up? Because everyone you and I meet has a story – everyone.
Some stories are happy ones and others are sad and still others are scary. If we can keep this in mind, it totally changes how we relate to people. That women in the grocery store who's walking around like she's on Mars, who can't keep her shopping cart out of your way – who knows what's going on with her? What is she experiencing in her life right now?
The man who's driving erratically in front of you or who gave you a rude gesture when he passed you – what is going on with him that he is so hostile?
When I meet people, I remind myself that I have no idea what their story is. I have no idea what has happened in their life to make them who and what they are today. And I make allowances for their behavior. I remember that some days I'm not at my best, either.
Remember that everyone has a story. Today, especially, when people are so divided in their beliefs and alliances, remember there could be a story that explains why they believe and act the way they do. Keep your heart open. Keep your ears open, too, and you might get to hear some fascinating stories. Our lives are richer when we welcome others into our space and give them unconditional acceptance and love.
